Library Clerk: Children's Library

Job Overview

Join our Children's Library team as a Library Clerk! A person in this classification performs work that directly affects the public. The quality of a library assistant’s work affects the quality of service provided by the Putnam County Library. Library assistants have direct interaction with the public and provide service both face to face and by phone. A library assistant reports to an assistant director. This position does not have the authority or responsibility to supervise.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs clerical and other support services that facilitate the orderly flow of library materials.
  • Sorts, prepares, shelves, and maintains library materials to be readily available and accessible to the public.
  • Administers the circulation desk including checking books in and out, maintaining reserves, collecting fines and deposits, collecting money from copies and used books sold.
  • Administers the creation and maintenance of patron records.
  • Assists in running office machines.
  • Covers books, places security devices, labels, etc, as part of routine processing of library materials.
  • Conducts initial information interview to ascertain patron needs.
  • Places holds on materials and initiates interlibrary loan transactions.
  • Searches and verifies book requests.
  • Assists patrons in operation of electronic catalog, and public computers.
  • Maintains and manages the public usage of computers.
  • Compiles statistics.
  • Assists in the training of part-time staff.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of databases and integrated library systems (ILS) for cataloging and data management.
  • Excellent writing skills for creating clear labels, reports, and communication with patrons.
  • Proficiency in data entry, filing, and maintaining organized records to support efficient library operations.
  • Outstanding customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, teachers, and staff.
  • Good organizational skills to manage multiple tasks such as shelving books, updating records, and supporting programs.
  • Basic computer skills including familiarity with software troubleshooting and using various digital tools.
  • Ability to conduct research using library resources to assist visitors in finding information or materials quickly.   • Good stamina; ability to stand on feet and walk most of the day; easily operate personal computer and keyboard. Ability to kneel, bend, stoop, sit on floor, and reach repeatedly; lift/carry library material weighing 25 lbs., and push book carts weighing 125 lbs.

Pay: From $35,000.00 per year
